Norfolk by Design brings together the organisational, curatorial, design and marketing skills of Davina Barber, Paul Barratt and Paul Vater in showcasing the work of artists and designer-makers based in Norfolk, to audiences throughout England’s eastern region.

DAVINA BARBER

After graduating in History of Art from Bristol University Davina Barber worked in London for both the Dickinson and Timothy Taylor Galleries. She went on to set up her own business sourcing unusual furniture and fine art for private clients. By then, with four small children in tow, she decided to move back to her home county of Norfolk. Here she discovered a wealth of talented artists and artisans attracted by inexpensive studios, natural light and the beautiful landscape. Davina felt there was a clear need to showcase their work, providing a platform for creative individuals and businesses by organising temporary exhibitions and events with the aide of Paul Vater and Paul Barratt, under the name: Norfolk by Design.

PAUL BARRATT

Paul Barratt started working in contemporary art galleries in 1989, having graduated in Fine Art from Goldmsith’s College London University attaining a BA. He initially worked as a gallery technician at Anthony d’Offay Gallery London, one of the contemporary art dealers, who formed the art market in the 80s and 90s. He was approached by the Lisson Gallery to be gallery manager for the influential art dealer Nicholas Logsdail. He also worked for an influential private collector based in London and Boston. In 1998 he moved to New York and Gladstone Gallery, to work for visionary art dealer Barbara Gladstone, working with the artist Matthew Barney, liaising with his studio’s film production team.

On returning to the UK Paul secured a place on the prestigious postgraduate curatorial course at the Royal College of Art graduating in 2001 with an MA in curating contemporary art. He worked as an independent curator on several projects in Oslo, London, Brighton and Basel, before working with Paul Vater at Sugarfree in 2004 as a Brand Manager. He has worked with Paul Vater for the last 12 years using his knowledge and experience to inform creative problem solving for commercial and public sector clients. Norfolk by Design has been a re-introduction for Paul to the pleasure of exhibition making in a variety of rural locations, instead of the architecturally neutral, ‘white cube’ gallery setting.
